Godly Woman Scriptures

What does it mean to be a godly woman?

Being a godly woman is emulating and imitating God. When we imitate God with our actions, decisions, behaviors, and livelihoods, then we are using our lives to glorify God.

To understand how to be a godly woman, we must understand who God is. In Jesus Christ, we see an incarnation of the traits of God since He is both man and God.

The way Jesus lived his life shows us what it means to be godly in the world. How to love your neighbor, love your enemy, and love your brother and sisters in Christ.

What are the qualities of a godly woman?

The qualities of a godly woman are that of Christ: kind, compassionate, faithful, generous, loving, gracious, merciful, patient. By emulating our creator and savior, we live godly lives that point others back to Christ.

These 15 godly woman scriptures reveal the qualities of a godly woman and what it means to live a godly life.

1 – Proverbs 31:25

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” Proverbs 31:25 (ESV)

Proverbs 31 is one of the most famous bible verses for women. I appreciate that in this passage, the qualities of a godly woman are spelled out in more action-oriented ways. Most of this chapter is full of Bible verses about a woman of good character and the qualities of a godly woman.

The godly woman being described in Proverbs 31 is very active, doing her work with purpose and conviction. She takes care of her family and others with wisdom and godly instruction.

2- Proverbs 31:26

“She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.”

From Proverbs 31, we also learn that a godly woman is influential. She encourages and steers others in the way that they should go with the word of God. In the same way, we can be showing God’s love to others in our actions, prayers, and hospitality.

3 – Proverbs 31:30

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30

What really stands out to me from Proverbs 31 and the qualities of a godly woman is verse 30. Above all, a woman of good character is described as a God fearing woman (Proverbs 31:30).

What is a God fearing woman?

A God fearing woman is a woman who understand God’s holiness and righteousness.

Kara J Lovett Co.

She knows who God is and more importantly, that she is unholy because of her sin. Tainted by sin and neither holy nor righteous, she knows that she needs Jesus to dwell and abide with God.

A woman of God attributes reverence and honor to God. She knows in her heart that only because of God’s grace and love can she enter the family of God.

Her fear of the Lord manifests as reverence and respect for God. Because of that, she lives a life of gratitude and wants to use her life to give God the glory He deserves.

4 – Proverbs 1:7

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.” Proverbs 1:7

The importance of the “fear of the Lord” is repeated throughout scripture. In the first chapter of Proverbs, Solomon writes that the beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord.

He continues to drive that point home in Proverbs and the other books that he wrote. It’s no surprise that Solomon’s father, David, also spoke often of “fear of the Lord” in Psalms.

Here are more bible verses about being a woman of God and a God-fearing women.

5 – Psalm 25:14

“The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.”

6 – Proverbs 23:17

“Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day.” Proverbs 23:17

In addition to fear of the Lord, no list of bible verses for women would be complete without a mention of humility. Throughout the Bible, God speaks about the importance of humility.

In His actions, He raises the humble and brings low the haughty. These next godly women scriptures remind us to strive for humility as we also strive to be like Jesus Christ.

7 – Luke 1:46-48

“My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant. For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.” Luke 1:46-48

These are the words of Mary, the mother of Jesus. After she finds out that God has chosen her to be the mother of Jesus, Mary praises the Lord.

In her praise, she also is humble. She knows she is unworthy of the great favor God has shown her.

Have you thanked God for how his grace, mercy, and favor has been over your life?

8 – Isaiah 66:2

“All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the Lord. But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.” Isaiah 66:2

One of my favorite encouraging scriptures for women is this one from Isaiah 66. It speaks to how God looks on those who are poor in spirit. He acknowledges and rewards the humble who recognize their need for him and his perfect love.

In a world where we are told to showcase our accomplishments and be perfectly composed at every moment, God says the opposite. God knows we are broken and in need of Him.

Those who love and delight in God’s word will see His hand over their lives.

9 – Psalm 149:4

“For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.” Psalm 149:4

10 – James 4:6b

“’God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” (James 4:6b)

Wisdom is another character trait closely tied with being a woman of God. More than just knowledge, wisdom is understanding how to apply knowledge.

In daily life, a wise and godly woman discerns right from wrong and wisdom from folly according to God’s law and heavenly wisdom.

Here are some bible verses for women that focus on wisdom. In these scriptures, we see how God blesses those who choose His wisdom over the world’s folly.

11 – Ephesians 5:15-16

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15-16

12 – Proverbs 3:5-7

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding . In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.”

13 – Psalm 14:2

“The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God.”

To end this list of bible verses about being a woman of God, here are some of my favorite stories about a godly woman of the Bible—Ruth and Hannah.

14 – Ruth 2:11 – 12

“But Boaz answered her, ‘All that you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you left your father and mother and your native land and came to a people that you did not know before. The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!’”

Though a stranger to the Israelites, God’s chosen people, Ruth is fully embraced into the family of God. That’s because even though she is a foreigner, she loves and cares for her mother-in-law Naomi with such devotion.

Ruth’s story shows a godly woman in action. Her heart for God allows her to bloom where she’s planted and be a vessel for God’s plan. Ruth has the honor of being part of Jesus’s blood line as the great-grandmother of King David.

15 – 1 Samuel 1: 15-16

“But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a woman troubled in spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for all along I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation.”

In Hannah’s amazing story of prayer, we see her devotion to the Lord and her worship. She prayed so hard that the priest thought she was drunk and talking to herself!

Though discouraged and brokenhearted, she held onto faith and believed God had the power to give her a son. When God granted her prayer, she dedicated her son to the Lord, as she had promised.
