Bible Verses about the Heart of a Woman

What are the qualities of a godly woman?

At its root, being godly is emulating and imitating God. When we imitate God in our actions, decisions, behaviors, and livelihoods, we are using our lives to glorify God. But our actions actually start at the heart.

When we have a heart solely focused on God, we embody the qualities of a godly woman. It affects our character, changes our values, and shifts our behaviors.

The qualities of a godly woman are those of Jesus:

  • kind
  • compassionate
  • faithful
  • generous
  • loving
  • gracious
  • merciful
  • patient

By emulating our creator and savior, we live godly lives that point others back to Christ.

As we imitate Jesus, these 16 Bible verses about the heart of a woman show that the position and posture of our hearts matter.

  1. Matthew 5:8
  2. Deuteronomy 29:18
  3. Proverbs 15:13-14
  4. Proverbs 17:22
  5. Acts 13:14
  6. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18
  7. 2 Corinthians 1:21-22
  8. Proverbs 31:25
  9. Proverbs 31:30
  10. Romans 12:9-12
  11. Luke 1:45
  12. James 1:19-20
  13. Psalm 56:3-4
  14. Exodus 1:17
  15. Hebrews 11:31
  16. Ruth 2:12

Matthew 5:8

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8 (ESV)

Jesus affirms that what is in our hearts is important as he speaks the Beatitudes in Matthew. In fact, the condition of our hearts directly relates to our relationship with God.

Deuteronomy 29:18a

“Beware lest there be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe whose heart is turning away today from the Lord our God to go and serve the gods of those nations.” Deuteronomy 29:18a

In this bible verse about the heart of a woman, God warns the people not to turn their hearts away from the Lord. Idolatry, which God is warning against here, pulls our hearts away from God.

Proverbs 15:13-14

“A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but by sorrow of heart the spirit is crushed. The heart of him who has understanding seeks knowledge, but the mouths of fools feed on folly.” Proverbs 15:13-14

In Proverbs, King Solomon writes about the effect our hearts have on our bodies and spirit. The heart of a woman affects her emotions, her actions, and her speech. We see a similar story in another bible verse about the heart of a woman in Proverbs (below).

Proverbs 17:22

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

Acts 13:14

“One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.” Acts 13:14

Lydia is a prime example of a woman whose heart was open to the Lord. That’s why this is one of my favorite Bible verses about the heart of a woman.

We see in her story how her heart and openness draws her to the Lord. Because of that, she was able to hear and receive the gospel being preached by Paul.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

In these verses, Paul reminds us to hope in the things to come. He encourages us to not lose heart despite what we may face in life. Notice that Paul says we can endure tough circumstances by focusing our hearts on Jesus and the things unseen.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

”And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” 2 Corinthians 1:21-22

This Bible verse about the heart of a woman emphasizes who we are in Christ. We have the assurance that we are children of God forever because we have the Holy Spirit in our hearts.

Proverbs 31:25

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.”

While I’ve pulled out one of my favorite verses from Proverbs 31 above, the entire chapter teaches us about what it means to be a woman of good character. From this chapter, a godly woman is described as influential and able to encourage and steer others in the way that they should go with the word of God (Proverbs 31:26).

It is the godly heart of the woman that makes her so treasured, not her outward beauty or worldly success.

Proverbs 31:30

“Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30

This rounds out the main Bible verses about the heart of a woman. Now we look at Bible verses that show how a heart transformed by God should affect our lives?

Our heart, filled with the gospel of Jesus, allows us to be women of God. These Bible verses about being a woman of good character show us what that looks like in daily life.

Romans 12:9-12

“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” Romans 12:9-12

Being a woman of good character means hating what is evil and rejoicing over what is good. We are called to love others as we love ourselves, be patient, and pray continually. And when are hearts are transformed by Christ, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to do these good deeds.

Luke 1:45

“And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.” Luke 1:45

Being a woman of God means believing that what God says will come to pass, just as Mary did when the angel told her she would conceive Jesus. Mary is a great example of a woman of good character because of her faith and humility. She trusted in God’s sovereign will and believed God was in control of the situation, even when her circumstances looked bleak.

James 1:19-20

“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God.” James 1:19-20

Godly women are also courteous towards others and slow to anger. They embody God’s love in their actions and speech.

Psalm 56:3-4

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust; I shall not be afraid. What can flesh do to me?” Psalm 56:3-4

Like this Psalm shows, being a godly woman doesn’t mean to live without fear. On the other hand, it means trusting in the Lord, even though fear has crept into our hearts.

As all these bible verses about the heart of a woman demonstrate, God wants the attention of our hearts. It is the beauty of our hearts that is everlasting, and our hearts turned toward God make all the difference in our lives.

Power of a Woman’s Heart in the Bible

When we turn toward God, we thrive in His love and strength, but when we turn away, we feel lost and unworthy. Time and time again, the power of a woman in the Bible comes from her relationship with God, and thus, the condition of her heart.

In these Bible verses about the heart of a woman, we see a transformation of a woman’s character through faith and fear of the Lord.

Here are examples of three women who demonstrate the power of a woman’s heart in the Bible.

  • For example, the midwives in Egypt refused to kill the male children of the Jews.
  • By protecting the Jewish spies, Rahab becomes one of two women in the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews 11.
  • Ruth is welcomed into the family of God, though she’s not Jewish by blood, because of her dedication to Naomi, her mother-in-law. She is an inspiring example of a woman who bloomed where she was planted.

Exodus 1:17

“But the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but let the male children live.” Exodus 1:17

Hebrews 11:31

“By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.” Hebrews 11:31

Ruth 2:12

“’The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!’” Ruth 2:12

Being a Woman of Good Character

A woman of good character is a God-fearing woman who understands God’s holiness and righteousness (Proverbs 31:30). She knows that, because of her sin, she needs Jesus to understand and experience the fullness of God’s love. And out of her gratitude, she desires to live her life in a way that gives God the glory He deserves.

As we strive to become more like Christ and live for Him, the transformation starts at the heart.
